Bethesda Magazine is an award-winning bi-monthly publication that covers the people, places and issues in Montgomery County, Maryland. Bethesda Beat is an award-winning online local news site that publishes an average of nine stories a day. Both are published by Z-Pop Media, the leading media company in Montgomery County, one of the nation’s largest and most affluent and diverse counties.

Audience Producer 

The audience producer uses audience initiatives, namely social media, to serve and grow our readership, and supports product development and optimization. The audience producer is a multidisplinary writer, crafting compelling copy for various platforms, instructing staff on relevant best practices and adhering to editorial standards and excellence. Together with the audience/product team, they collaborate with the editorial staff to help shape our content and promote our brand. The person in this role reports to the director of audience development & digital products.     

Core Responsibilities: 

Audience development and engagement   

  • Acts as a manager for our social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram, participating in strategy conceptualization   
  • Crafts posts, including video content, in our voice and style, to promote our brand and content  
  • Manages longform/features content promotion, including writing and editing copy for headlines/descriptions, social, SEO, alerts and more  
  • Edits the newsroom’s SEO copy, instructing colleagues on best practices  
  • Makes editorial recommendations based on analytics, social media and search trends  
  • Identifies ways to connect with audiences, including by assisting editorial staff with story conceptualization   
  • Guides staff on social, SEO and alert best practices, and helps shape and edit interdepartmental collateral for those platforms 

Website and newsletter operations  

  • Provides audience and operational support for alerts, in coordination with our digital and editorial teams  
  • Assists audience development & digital products director with product development and migrations    
  • Assists with the strategy and layout of special web packages and initiatives, like voters guides, in coordination with our web producer   
  • Provides backup to the web producer    
  • Performs other duties as assigned    

Knowledge and skills: 

  • Experience writing compelling, grammatical copy for a variety of platforms, at a news media company 
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with editorial staff on content, including breaking news stories 
  • Fluency in digital analytics, and ability to make editorial decisions and recommendations rooted in data  
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress and Mailchimp, or similar tools
