UPDATED 3:30 p.m. Montgomery County Police are investigating the Monday morning death of a construction worker as a construction accident.

MCFRS units were called around 8 a.m. to a house under construction in the 5700 block of Bent Branch Road, near the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Goldsboro Road.

Police say 42-year-old John Joseph Whitney, of the 10300 block of Hickory Ridge Road in Columbia, was accidentally pinned between a mini-excavator and the house. Two other construction workers at the house were able to free Whitney, sustaining non life-threatening injuries in the process.

All three were rushed to Suburban hospital, where Whitney died.

MCFRS spokesperson Beth Anne Nesselt said Maryland Occupational Safety and Health officials were requested to the scene. Detectives from MCP’s Major Crimes Division determined the incident was an accident.

A report from ABC7 says Whitney worked for Bethesda-based Castlewood Builders and the two other workers were injured when they punched out the glass window of the excavator while trying to free him.
